A Change for the Better

In the short story The Necklace, Guy Maupassant portrays the depth of emotions of the caseful Matilde Loisel. Early on in the story the reader hears of Matildes impulse from riches and fame. Her reality, however, includes living in a relatively well-heeled home and being married to a little salesclerk in the Ministry of Education. While fantasizing over a surreal life, genius she truly believes she deserves, Mme. Loisel neglects and has no appreciation for the life her humble and adjuvant husband has given to her. Maupassant creates a series of events that take the wizard on a life- altering experience. He uses the original necklace, the bemused necklace and the replacement necklace to symbolize the three different phases of Mme. Losiels character. The original necklace symbolizes the change individual Matilde was at the beginning of the story. Her imagination roamed around a noble life that she could never possess. The narrator tells the reader that Matilde, suffered from the thinness of her house, from its mean walls, worm chairs, and ugly curtains (1). The word suffered indicates that Matilde experiences a invent of pain in not being able to direct all her desires. However, the fact that she is able to keep a retainer suggests that they are moderately wealthy, but Matilde dreams of more.

Maupassant uses the original necklace to symbolize the man-made and tinny life Matilde craves. The necklace Matilde borrows from her friend, turns out to be a cheap imitation and not a real diamond. Consequently, Matildes life beforehand losing the necklace, is also artificial. The silent antechambers, heavy with oriental tapestries, the vast saloons hung with old-fashioned silks and the perfumed rooms that she dreams of are just material possessions that discharge value over time.
