Candaules, the king of Lydia, was really proud of the beauty of his cigarette. Gyges was hesitant to accept the offer, and with persuasion, Gyges agrees to it. Candaules creates a plan for Gyges to follow; Gyges would hide cigarette a door in the royal bedroom and define as the queen disrobes, after he accomplishes his mission, he would repudiate the room when the queens back was turned. During the execution of the plan, the queen sees Gyges leaving the room and this enrages the queen. The enraged queen, figuring that her king was the witness of this vile scheme, felt betrayed and shamed. This causes the queen summon Gyges, and forces a decision onto him, either he would kill the king for the wicked plot he has done to the queen, or Gyges will have to wear out due to propriety of seeing her naked.
Gyges chooses to betray the king, and together, the queen and Gyges, devises a plot to murder the king. Gyges does so, marries the queen, and takes the kings throne. This is the Herodotus form of the story.
The Plato version is more mythical.
