Consider this you stand alone on a vast frozen plane, hundreds of miles from human habitation. As you contend the shrieking gales of a monstrous arctic blizzard you grapple that your completely hope of survival lies in your ability to exert moving towards your destination, to navigate an obscure winter trail, to control your dogs and sled, and to harbour the energy and persistence to go on…to push frontward…to do what it divvy ups to see the job done.
Alan Sullivans The Essence of a Man is the final short bill in the anthology A Sense of Belonging. I chose this story for my presentation for two reasons. Firstly, because it IS the destruction story, it is one that is more likely to be overlooked by some of you in your study of the stories. Secondly, it is a short story worth reading and considering in the general context of our incline on identity and belonging. The simplicity of plot, the power of the language, the questions it raises about our postulate as human beings to survive in hostile environments against elicit odds and the unusual scope of the story have- for me anyway- elevated this story as one of the best in the anthology. In my tongue I will be discussing four main aspects plot, style, fastenting and theme.
Firstly, let me give you a brief overview of the story which is set in the freezing wilderness of north Canada. Tom Moore, a powerfully built man of mixed race is asked to take a three hundred pound load of infixed provisions from the Ignace Trading Post across ice and coulomb to the Hudson Bay factor at Lac Seul. When a lynx ( a big cat) attempts to steal the fish he has put up in the tree, falls on his sleeping dogs and several argon injured in the melee that follows, Tom is left with only two dogs to carry the load. However, the wolf is born again in his remaining huskies who steal his food and follow him threateningly as he hauls the load himself.
