Nathan Manting Dr. Wang PHIL 2200 31 January 2011 The Ordinary and Simple Life The Death of Ivan Ilych was a perfectly story that raised many philosophical questions and made the endorser interpret the deeper meaning of the text to truly understand what Tolstoy was toilsome to convey to the reader. During the story, I nominate myself having to re-read passages so I could read the true meaning behind the story. The story was interesting in the fact that it started with Ivans death and how people were reacting to his death. Then the rest of the chapters were some Ivans emotional state and how he interacted with his colleagues, wife and family, and friends. Most of the people that were in Ivans life were non disappointed when they learned about his death, only they were instead somewhat happy and looked forward for the opportunity to declare his job and advance in the social ranks. I found this to be an over whole theme and way of presupposeing for the Russian culture at this point in history. While I found the entire story to be interesting, there was angiotensin converting enzyme repeat that stood out more than any of the other quotes. The quote seemed to sum up Ivans life in wholeness sentence, Ivan Ilychs life had been most simple and most fair and therefore most distasteful.

[1] Most people would say that a simple life and an ordinary life usually is not a terrible thing but for Ivan it was the worse of all lives. To say that someone has lived a simple and ordinary life usually means that they have lived a boring life. A boring life is not necessarily a terrible life though. People look at my life and would think that my life is simple because I usually have the equal week, every week. I go to class, I do homework, I play some sports, I eat the same types of food, I sleep, and I hang out with the same crowd of people. I live a relative simple life, but it is not a terrible one for the sole reason that I enjoy what I do in life and I make decisions based on what I want and where I want to go in...
