Durigan 1 Final Paper Throughout the course of this semester, four books were read. separately of the books argon written differently. Candide was a satire while A lowly Place was a critique. Also, Storm of Steel and Night were memoirs. Each book displayed either optimism or pessimism of western civilization. When the admiral was executed for fighting the French, the government had unjustly convicted him of a crime when he was just doing his job. inside the book, power was used unjustly. Candide poked fun at the church and government through these examples.

Durigan 2 The unjust events in Candide make for a story that has a really pessimistic tone that refers to the unjust events within the book.
