Western Civ History Reflection

Durigan 1 Final Paper Throughout the course of this semester, four books were read. separately of the books argon written differently. Candide was a satire while A lowly Place was a critique. Also, Storm of Steel and Night were memoirs. Each book displayed either optimism or pessimism of western civilization. Each occasions, or characters, experiences give an understanding of their part of western hi base. Either the optimism or pessimism of each book gives the reader acuteness into the duration period of the book. Candide was a witty book that attacked the church building and the state. Voltaire saw the disgusting acts of power that the church and state performed. He showed the corruption at heart his work. He showed the hypocrisy of the church when he wrote about the daughter of the Pope. The pope was supposed to take a vow of celibacy, yet somehow has a daughter. Another antecedent such as the Catholic Inquisitor who had a whore shows corruption within the church. Also, Candide attacked the organization. When the admiral was executed for fighting the French, the government had unjustly convicted him of a crime when he was just doing his job. inside the book, power was used unjustly. Candide poked fun at the church and government through these examples.
