For many years, abuse in prisons has been a serious issue and over the years, the abuse has alone gotten worse. We gain on the news of this happening in other countries plainly many Americans do not realize this is happening in our country as well, right under our noses. Some of the about unimaginable things take place in prisons not also far from where we live. Everyday, inmates undergo a variance of different forms of abuse.

This gives the inmates a feeling of isolation with no one to turn to, ending in them having to fend for themselves. The only efficient way of fending for themselves is using forcefulness. These inmates face humiliation, shame, and embarrassment and are stripped of their ability to change their lives in order to render productive members of society upon re-entry into their communities
Not only is physical violence an issue, but sexual abuse is also a round problem in prisons.
Men are constantly being persuaded and compel into sexual contact with not only spring inmates, but correctional officers as well. One recollection by Garrett Cunningham, an inmate at the Luther Unit in Navasota, states that he was handcuffed on his way to the shower facilities, raped by an officer, and then forced to shower afterwards. He was then told that if we was to tell anyone of the incident, he would be placed in a rougher unit where he would be raped all the time. Whenever an inmate pleas and cries about being sexually assaulted, they get ignored and laughed at. Women are also bailiwick to sexual abuse by the correctional officers and surprisingly, the former women inmates as well.
