Procter and Gamble was started by William Procter and James Gamble on October 31, 1837 in Cincinnati, OH. William Procter was a candle maker, and James Gamble was a soap maker. Procter and Gamble met when they married sisters Olivia and Elizabeth Norris. Procter and Gamble was persuaded to become parentage partners by their father-in-law, Alexander Norris. The early major opportunity for Procter, Gamble and their approximately 80 employees, was during the American Civil War when they win the contract to supply the Union Army with candles and soap.
