The Lakeland Centre for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a non-profit scheme which works with a multi-disciplinary team in diagnosing, counselling, mentoring and programming for individuals in the Lakeland area (Cold Lake, Alberta). They provide diagnostic and assessment services for adults and children, mothers-to-be-mentoring, fostering and presentations and summer youth programming. For the purpose of this assignment I am choosing to focus on the summer youth programming.
The summer coterie is held yearly for children and youth between the ages of 8-17 who have been diagnosed with FASD. The camps are organize up according to age and gender and run for half-dozen days and five nights with four main staff works around the clock daily with volunteers (Speech and Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, usher leaders etc…) helping out with the implementation of programming. The purpose for this camp is twofold one, to provide respite for the families and caregivers of the youth and two, to provide sound and fun programming for youths who have had less than positive earlier camp experiences.
This summer camp hopes to provide continual knowledge of acceptable social behaviour, peer socializing and new experiences with children share the same diagnosis in a positive learning environment.
The aspect that interests me the most is that the camp is designed to provide alter programming for the children while they are at camp, specific and adapt towards their diagnosis. The outcome is that the children will learn appropriate ways of dealing with situations rather than being removed from camp. Diagnosis- specific programming is oftentimes overlooked in regular camp experiences because it is geared to the sightly child.
