Sin. Passion. Love. Hate. Death. All these tender emotions can best be used to describe Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel: The red earn. Hawthorne lived and wrote during the quixotic period of literature but yet he could not escape his Puritanism heritage. Hawthorne is amateurized still today for his beliefs and his novels.
Even though Hawthorne treasured to stay away from his Puritan Heritage, he still wrote in a Puritanistic way. Hawthorne believed that sinners were punished for the sins they commit and that man is evil. The red-faced Letter is a novel that is about a young muliebrity who falls in love with a Puritan sermoniser whom later dies because of his guilt. This evidence is often used by literary critics to say that Hawthorne was Puritan even though he treasured to escape his heritage, and wrote during the Romantic period.
Reverend A.C. Coxe, a literary critic of Hawthorne, questioned that theme of The Scarlet Letter stating, “ It is a reconciliation of human nature with estrangement from home and country.” He also declared that, “ It was a book made for the market.” Coxe also stated that the honourable of the novel was to “be true”.
Despite his criticism, Coxe still thinks that The Scarlet Letter “is well written and uses metaphors instead of direct narration.”

literary critic, Richard Brodhead states, “for his literary descendants Hawthorne achieved and preserved an almost talismanic force.” Brodhead continues on stating, “He (Hawthorne) was never a popular author in the sense of having best-sellers, except perhaps in the ease of The Scarlet Letter, which owing to its subject -- matter was a suces de scandale...”
